Redevelopment of the playground of Arthur L. Greenwell Park in Captain Cook began Monday and will continue for about five months, according to 91ֱ County.
The project is part of an ongoing effort to make local park facilities compliant with Americans with Disabilities Act standards, county spokesman Tom Callis said.
The existing playground equipment will be removed, and Callis said upgrades will include installing new “popular with kids” and “durable” ADA-compliant Kompan brand equipment like those installed in Gilbert Kahele Recreation Area and at Kamehameha Park.
Additional upgrades to improve ADA compliance include reconfigured accessible walkways throughout the playground, the removal of noncompliant pea gravel surfacing, and installation of a synthetic turf safety surfacing system, Callis said.
The $900,000 project being completed with county capital improvement project funding is the first installation of new playground equipment at this park since 1998, Callis said.
“Regular hours for construction are anticipated to be 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, though that may vary at times,” Callis said.
The playground area will be closed during construction, and the public is asked to observe posted safety notices and closures throughout the project.
