After winning four straight games, the Kohala boys fell short to Owyhee of Oregon 67-51 in the Iolani Classic quarterfinals. The Cowboys led 25-21 at halftime, but Owyhee stomped on the gas in the second half — out-scoring the Big Island team 46-26 to claim victory.

Kohala guard Layden Kauka led all scorers with 25 points on 7-for-14 from the field. Teammate Dillon Oandasan added 17. Freshman James Wong, who had a strong outing in Wednesday’s game against De La Salle, scored seven.

The Cowboys are averaging 61.5 points per game this season while allowing 46.5. Kohala moved to the consolation side of the bracket, and played Lexington Catholic on Friday night at Iolani. See next week’s paper for more coverage.

Logan Haustveit of Owyhee scored 24 points, while teammate Canaan Magness added 15.

Back on the Big Island, the Pahoa boys clinched win No. 1 of the season after a 21-point outing from Kyran Canete — enough to escape the Cougars with a 39-36 victory at Kea‘au High School. Teammate Rysaiah Abadilla added 10.

Kaiana Miller of the Cougars scored a team-high 14 points.

The Daggers, now 1-2. are set to visit Hilo on Tuesday to take on the Vikings. It will be the first and only matchup between the two schools in 2025-26.

Kea‘au (0-3) will enjoy the holiday off before hosting Kealakehe on Dec. 27 in Cougar Gym. It will be the first of two matchups between the Cougars and Waveriders this season.

Kea‘au and Pahoa’s junior varsity teams also squared off, with the Cougars winning 60-25.

In Hilo town, the Waiakea girls remained unbeaten after a 47-7 rout of Kealakehe at home. The Lady Warriors elevated to a perfect 10-0 on the season, while the Lady ‘Riders stayed winless after their loss.

Bryia Carenio, who averages 10 points per game for Waiakea, poured in a game-high 14 points. The team’s top scorer — freshman Arieana Doran — added 12.

In the Lady Warriors’ hot start, they are averaging 47.1 points per game overall. In BIIF play alone, they are allowing under 13 points per game to Big Island competition.

Waiakea will enjoy some much-deserved time off, next set to take the floor Dec. 27 at Konawaena. The matchup is widely expected to be a good one, as the two squads are seen as the best on the island.

For Kealakehe, Sara Broberg, Sophia Lung, Aurea Spencer and Keisha Mateo all scored. The Lady ‘Riders will also return Dec. 27, scheduled to face Kea‘au.

Over on the Hamakua Coast, the Parker boys beat Laupahoehoe 60-37 to improve to 2-2 on the year. The Seasiders remained winless, dropping to 0-3.

The Bulls, averaging nearly 47 points per game, will enjoy the holiday break before being tasked with Kohala on Jan. 7 in Kapa‘au. Laupahoehoe will be back Dec. 30 against the Daggers in Pahoa town.
