HILO — On Thursday night at Waiakea High, the Lady Warriors basketball team handled Kea‘au for the second time this season, winning 51-20 to elevate to 12-1 overall.
The winners were spearheaded by Bryia Carenio, who dropped a season-high 21 points. The junior averages 11.3 points per game on the year, including seven double-digit scoring games.
Teammate Harley Cabreros added 12 points, while Arieana Doran and Haylee Toomey combined for 14.
Offensively, Waiakea averages nearly 47 points per game. Thursday was also the seventh time this season that the Lady Warriors allowed 20 points or less. Their impressive defense lets up less than 25 points per game.
The Lady Cougars, who dropped to 4-8 overall, were led by Blessyng Rosario with nine points. Teammates Thaliya Kokubun and Adryana Lorenzo combined for eight.
Kea‘au has lost three of its last four, and averages 25.3 points per game.
Waiakea next takes on 91直播 Preparatory Academy in a rematch from November — slated for Monday inside Castle Gymnasium in Waimea. When the two teams last met, the Lady Warriors won 43-12.
The Lady Cougars will return to the court Tuesday to face Honoka‘a on the Hamakua Coast.
HPA’s teams also played Thursday, with the girls winning 52-32 and the boys 68-11 over the hosting Christian Liberty Canefire.
The Ka Makani girls won their third straight, improving to 3-6 overall after a slow start to the season. HPA averages nearly 32 points per game against the BIIF. The red and white will take on Hilo at 4 p.m. this afternoon on the road. Ka Makani fell to the Vik Queens 44-33 last month.
The Canefire girls lost their second consecutive, falling to 1-4. They average nearly 30 points per game. CLA will host Kealakehe on Tuesday in Kea‘au. The Waveriders are the only team the Canefire have a win against, beating them 37-21 on Dec. 11, 2025.
The HPA boys won their second consecutive, elevating to 5-4 overall. They average 48 points per game against the BIIF while allowing 27. Ka Makani’s next test will be against Kea‘au on Monday in Waimea. It will be the lone matchup this season between the two teams.
The Canefire will travel to Pahoa town to play the Daggers at 7 p.m. this evening.
