The Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) springs sports season continued Wednesday with matchups across the isle.
Baseball
Thanks to Honoka‘a baseball’s 10 base hits — led by Josyah Napoleon-Umeda’s home run and two RBI — the Dragons were able to secure a 7-2 road win over Ka‘u in Pahala.
Honoka‘a elevated to 2-0 in the early season, while the Trojans dropped to 2-2.
Supplementing Salazar at the plate were teammates Chrys Coelho and Kiakahi Lindsey, who combined for four hits. Jayden Salazar, Rory Crabbe and Keaka Bajo each had one hit.
Isaac DeRego pitched the majority of the outing, striking out eight batters and allowing one run over 4.0 innings. Salazar and Crabbe also shared time on the mound, combining for eight strikeouts.
On Ka‘u’s side, Caleb Crook, Canaan Crook, Devin Alpin, Davin Lanjid and Ehu Craft each logged a hit. Both Caleb and Eli Crook each shared time on the mound, combining for seven strikeouts.
The two teams are slated to rematch next week.
Further north, Pahoa baseball handled Kohala at home, winning 7-4. The Daggers posted 10 hits to the Cowboys’ seven.
Pahoa scored six runs in the first four innings, giving them enough runway to seal the win. The Daggers elevated to 1-1 this season, while Kohala is still winless.
Volleyball
Kohala boys volleyball won their second match of the season after a straight-sets win over Paliku in Kapa‘au. The Cowboys moved to 2-1.
The black and gold won the sets 25-16, 25-20 and 25-16.
The Cowboys return to the floor against Makua Lani Christian Academy on Monday at Old Kona Airport’s gymnasium.
Paliku, now 1-1, will play Christian Liberty Academy on Monday in Kea‘au.
