KEA’AU — Kamehameha-91Ö±²¥ baseball routed Kea‘au for the second time in a week on Saturday at home.

Led by Hunter Yamamoto’s two key hits and four RBI, the Warriors were able to rout the Cougars 14-1 — with umpires calling the game after five innings due to the mercy rule.

In the two matchups between the two programs last week, Kamehameha (4-2) out-scored Kea‘au 33-1. In the early season, the Warriors have a commendable 57-17 run differential.

Kamehameha posted a 10-run first inning, as Yamamoto got things going by doubling to score two. Later in the inning, Yamamoto singled, which brought in one more score. Teammate Kamau Passi grounded out shortly after, but drove in one more run. Eli Mercado and Dayton Hanson then tripled, which scored two more runs. Blayze Leslie and Iokepa Martines soon drew a walks, which sent home one run each. The Warriors ballooned their lead in the bottom of the third after Hanson grounded out and Yamamoto smacked a sacrifice fly, which each scored runs. In the fourth inning, the winners put the cherry on top by scoring two additional runs.

But Yamamoto wasn’t just impressive at the plate — he earned the win on the mound, too. Teammate Kaikoa Nobriga closed the game in dominant fashion, striking out seven Cougars.

Yamamoto leads his team in innings pitched and wins.

Kamehameha also protected the diamond cleanly — committing no errors to Kea‘au’s three.

John Ramos was the lone Cougar that logged a base hit. Elson Kalawe and Mikah Ibanez shared time on the mound for Kea‘au.

The Warriors will rematch Kealakehe on Tuesday at home. When the two squads last met on the diamond during the Feb. 27 season opener, Kamehameha won in an 11-0 run rule.

The Cougars will have another tall task, set to take on the defending BIIF DI champion Waiakea on Wednesday at Kea‘au High. It will be the first of two matchups this season between the east-side schools.

On Friday afternoon at Hilo High, Waiakea stayed perfect on the season after a 3-0 shutout of the Vikings. Last year’s Division-I state runner-up elevated to 4-0, while Hilo dropped to 1-2.

91Ö±²¥ Prep’s Saturday matchup in Kapa‘au against Kohala was postponed.
