1913 — Walter Johnson allows an unearned run in the first inning of the Washington Senators’ 2-1 victory over the New York Yankees. He will not give up another run over his next 56 innings.

1947 — Brooklyn Dodgers president Branch Rickey makes history when he announces that the team has purchased the contract of Jackie Robinson from the minor-league Montreal Royals.

1959 — Second baseman Nellie Fox, who went the 1958 season without a home run, goes deep against Detroit’s Don Mossi in the 14th inning to lead the Chicago White Sox to a 9-7 win on Opening Day.

1962 — Roman Mejias hits two three-run homers as the Houston Colt .45s win their regular-season franchise debut, 11-2, against the Chicago Cubs.

1962 — Dodger Stadium opens in Los Angeles, with the hometown Dodgers falling to the Cincinnati Reds, 6-3. The team had played the previous four years at the Los Angeles Coliseum.

1971 — On a chilly day in Philadelphia, 55,352 fans turn out to see the Phillies top the Montreal Expos, 4-1, in the first game ever played at Veterans Stadium.

1973 — The Kansas City Royals play their first game in Royals Stadium, crushing the Texas Rangers by a 12-1 count in front of 39,464 fans. The park will be renamed Kauffman Stadium in 1993.

1976 — Pioneering free agent pitcher Andy Messersmith, formerly of the Los Angeles Dodgers, uses his newfound liberty and signs a two-year deal with the Atlanta Braves.

1977 — In the eighth inning at Fenway Park, the Cleveland Indians (13) and Boston Red Sox (6) set a major league record for most runs scored by both teams in a single inning.

1979 — Chicago White Sox owner Bill Veeck offers free admission to the next day’s game after his team is routed by the Toronto Blue Jays, 10-2, in the season opener.

1985 — Baltimore Orioles shortstop Cal Ripken sees his consecutive games played streak of 444 jeopardized when he sprains his ankle, but he stays in the game.

1989 — The youngest player in the majors at age 19, Seattle Mariners rookie Ken Griffey Jr. hits his first big league home run on the first pitch he sees at the Kingdome. The blast comes on his father’s 39th birthday.

1990 — Boston’s Wade Boggs ties a major league record when he is intentionally walked three times in a nine-inning game.

2003 — Craig Biggio hits his 31st career leadoff home run for the Houston Astros, breaking Bobby Bonds’ National League record. He remains well short of Rickey Henderson’s major league mark of 80.

2003 — First baseman Todd Helton and shortstop Jose Hernandez combine to turn the first triple play in Colorado Rockies history during a 7-6 home win over the St. Louis Cardinals.

2018 — Toronto Blue Jays closer Roberto Osuna pitches one inning in relief and picks up his fifth save of the season in a 2-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. Osuna becomes the first 23-year old player to record 100 career saves.

1953 — The Minneapolis Lakers notch a 91-84 victory over the New York Knicks in Game 5 to claim the NBA championship.

1955 — George King hit the decisive free throw with 12 seconds left to lift the Syracuse Nationals to a 92-91 victory over the Fort Wayne Pistons in Game 7 of the NBA Finals.

1972 — The Portland Trail Blazers select center LaRue Martin with the No. 1 overall pick. The Buffalo Braves tab future Hall of Famer Bob McAdoo with the second choice.

1977 — Pete Maravich (45 points) and Nate Williams (41) both top 40 points as the New Orleans Jazz register a 139-125 win over the Denver Nuggets.

1982 — Adrian Dantley scores 53 points as the Utah Jazz down the Denver Nuggets 151-136.

1985 — Norm Nixon records 20 assists to go with 29 points to lead the Los Angeles Clippers to a 129-127 win over the Denver Nuggets.

1986 — Dominique Wilkins ties a still-standing franchise record with 57 points as the Atlanta Hawks post a 126-117 win over the New Jersey Nets. Wilkins tied the record again eight months later. Bob Pettit (1961) and Lou Hudson (1969) also scored 57 points for the Hawks.

1990 — Utah’s John Stockton dishes out 20 assists as the Jazz dispatch of the Seattle SuperSonics 114-102.

1999 — The Chicago Bulls fall 82-49 to the Miami Heat to score the fewest points since the shot clock was installed prior to the 1954-55 season. Chicago also made a record-low 18 field goals.

2009 — Chris Paul scores 42 points but the New Orleans Hornets fall 100-92 to the Dallas Mavericks.
