Matson should
‘do the right thing’
Thank you for the article (May 1) about Kawaihae Harbor planning a $50 million upgrade.
However, this makes no sense!
The whole problem that they are trying to solve comes from a selfish business decision made by Matson to dump all its Hilo-bound cargo in Kawaihae instead of sailing it to Hilo.
And because of that hare-brained decision, we get thousands of more trucks running through Waimea every month, more chance of deadly accidents, more noise and pollution, traffic jams, road damage from Kawaihae to Hilo, and a $50 million tax bill.
Come on, Matson. Do the right thing! Just sail your ships to Hilo like you’ve been doing since 1882.
This should not even be Matson’s decision. Doesn’t the state regulate this kind of thing?
Let’s not throw away money right now on something for which there is a simple and obvious solution.
Matson: Stop dumping your Hilo cargo in Kawaihae!

The national ‘bird’
is indeed a turkey
There is an enduring American myth that Benjamin Franklin preferred the turkey over the bald eagle as a symbol of America. Now, after 250 years, his desire is coming to fruition.
American passports will soon feature the picture of an American turkey, which is also seen in huge banners appearing about the country.
We are already minting gold coins featuring the image of the turkey, as well as Federal Reserve notes soon to contain turkey tracks in the lower right corner.
The naming of monuments and infrastructure is soon to follow.
Indeed, to people around the world today, a turkey is the symbol of American leadership.
