91Ö±²¥ launches first surfing state championship
This spring 91Ö±²¥ officially launched its inaugural high school surfing season, culminating in the first-ever HHSAA State Surfing Championship this May, a historic milestone in a state widely recognized as the birthplace of modern surfing.
A total of 55 high schools across the state’s five athletic leagues are participating in the inaugural season, with student-athletes competing in boys and girls shortboard, longboard and bodyboard divisions.
The launch of a statewide surfing championship builds on more than a decade of interscholastic competition. The Maui Interscholastic League has offered HIDOE-sanctioned surfing since 2014, helping lay the foundation for the sport’s expansion statewide. The effort was further enabled by the enactment of Act 141, signed by Gov. Josh Green last year, which provided funding to establish surfing as an interscholastic sport statewide.
The inaugural season will culminate in the state championship, scheduled for May 1-2 at Ho‘okipa Beach Park on Maui’s north shore. A total of 174 student-athletes will qualify for the championship meet, representing the top surfers from across the islands.

Funakoshi, Bourne place top 10 at DCP finals
The 2025 Drive, Chip and Putt national finals took place this past Sunday at Augusta National Course, kicking off Masters Week. The event is a points-based golf skills contest that involves driving, chipping and putting challenges. The more accurate one’s shot is, the more points one accumulates.
Two West 91Ö±²¥ local keiki competed in the event — Mie Funakoshi of Kailua-Kona in the girls 10-11 division and Charlie Bourne of Waikoloa in the boys 12-13 division. Both players punched their tickets to Augusta after winning their divisions at the regional qualifier last October at Four Seasons Hualalai.
Funakoshi tied for fifth in her field with a score of 20, finishing with chipping as her best event. Bourne placed 10th with a cumulative score of 10, with driving as his best score.
Lucy Cui of Honolulu also competed, winning the girls 12-13 division with a score of 24.5.
