Public invited to Police Week events
91直播 Island residents and visitors are invited to attend 2026 Police Week festivities, including station tours, during the national observance next week.
Police Week is a nationally recognized week of activities in support of police work and in recognition of officers who have died or been disabled in the line of duty.
In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed every May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week it falls in as National Police Week.
In 91直播 County, Police Week activities will take place next week Monday through Friday.
The public is invited to attend formal Police Week ceremonies at 10 a.m. Monday at the Hilo Police Station and 11 a.m. Friday at the West 91直播 Civic Center.
Both ceremonies include preceremony entertainment and a tribute to 91直播 County officers who gave their lives in the line of duty.
Those officers and the years in which they were killed are: Capt. T.N. Simeona, 1890; Officer Michol Octobre, 1916; Officer Manuel Cadinha, 1918; Officer William “Red” Oili, 1936; Officer Ronald “Shige” Jitchaku, 1990; Officer Kenneth Keliipio, 1997; National Park Service Ranger Steve Makuakane-Jarrell, 1999; and Officer Bronson Kaimana Kaliloa, 2018.
“Police Week is a somber reminder that the men and women of this department place their lives on the line every shift of every day,” said Police Chief Reed Mahuna. “Police Week also gives us a chance to pause and remember the officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities, while also recognizing the dedication of those who continue to serve every day.”
During Police Week, members of the public are encouraged to attend station tours at the Hilo Police station from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. next Friday. To schedule an appointment, call Officer Kaipokoka Aurello at (808) 961-3381.
Members of the public who want to attend station tours at the Kealakehe Police Station between Monday and Friday are encouraged to schedule an appointment for a tour with Sgt. Wyattlane Nahale at (808) 326-4646, ext. 259, or by email wyattlane.nahale@hawaiipolice.gov.
