George Kirby once again pitches Mariners past Astros
George Kirby posted a season-high seven strikeouts while Julio Rodriguez homered as the visiting Seattle Mariners claimed the opener of a four-game series against the Houston Astros with a 3-1 victory on Monday.
Kirby (5-2) continued his stellar pitching against the Astros. He entered his 11th career regular-season start against Houston with a 5-1 record and 2.17 ERA, and while he logged a season-low five innings, Kirby maintained his previous standard of success.
The Astros managed seven hits off Kirby, all singles. Jose Altuve recorded two singles against Kirby but was erased in the bottom of the first when Yordan Alvarez rolled into a double play.
Isaac Paredes finished 3-for-3 against Kirby, including an RBI single in the fifth that plated Altuve. But Kirby followed with inning-ending strikeouts of Christian Walker after Paredes singled in the first and third innings, and he included consecutive fielder’s-choice grounders after Altuve, Alvarez and Paredes strung together consecutive one-out singles in the fifth inning.
Kirby matched his season high of 99 pitches, and he failed to retire the Astros in order in any of his five frames. But he allowed only one run and walked two.
Astros right-hander Peter Lambert (2-3) matched his career high of seven innings for a second consecutive start. But the Mariners struck for a pair of runs in the top of the second when Dominic Canzone and Cole Young, batting eighth and ninth in the order, stroked back-to-back RBI singles with two outs that plated Randy Arozarena and Luke Raley.
Rodriguez, who narrowly missed homering in his first at-bat, smacked an 0-2 fastball from Lambert 414 feet to left field leading off the third, his seventh homer upping the lead to 3-0.
Seattle closer Andres Munoz, the Mariners’ fourth reliever of the game, notched his eighth save with a strikeout of Alvarez and Altuve (3-for-5) on first.
Balanced, patient attack guides Guardians past Angels
Daniel Schneemann, Travis Bazzana and Brayan Rocchio each drove in two runs as the host Cleveland Guardians cruised to a 7-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Monday.
Guardians starter Joey Cantillo (3-1) tossed six shutout innings in a 93-pitch performance. He scattered five hits, walked one and struck out four.
David Fry went 2-for-3 with a double, a run and an RBI and Kyle Manzardo finished 2-for-4 with a double and two runs for Cleveland in the opener of a three-game set. The Guardians had lost their previous two contests.
Nolan Schanuel and Jo Adell each had two hits for the Angels, who took their third loss in four games.
A five-run third — when the Guardians had only two hits but drew four walks — staked Cleveland to a 7-0 lead.
The Guardians loaded the bases on walks to Chase DeLauter, Rhys Hoskins and Manzardo, chasing Jose Fermin from the game with one out.
Kirby Yates entered in relief and walked Fry, forcing in DeLauter. Schneemann’s broken-bat bloop single gave the Guardians a 5-0 advantage when Hoskins and Manzardo scored.
The Guardians took the 7-0 lead on Bazzana’s two-run double to left center field that scooted past a diving Mike Trout.
In the second, Manzardo reached on a broken-bat single with one out and Fry singled. After Schneemann moved up the runners with a fielder’s-choice grounder, Bazzana walked to load the bases. Fermin then replaced Brent Suter on the mound for Los Angeles.
With an 0-2 count, Rocchio lined a single to right field, scoring Manzardo and Schneemann as the Guardians took a 2-0 lead.
When Cleveland turned to its bullpen in the seventh, Los Angeles loaded the bases on a hit batter, a single and a walk against Matt Festa, but Vaughn Grissom line out to center field, ending the threat.
Adell’s RBI single in the eighth got the Angels on the board. Grissom’s single plated Zach Neto in the ninth.
Suter (1-2) gave up two runs on two hits in 1 2/3 innings. He struck out one and walked one.
Cleveland’s patient offensive approach produced 10 walks.
Diamondbacks pitchers toss another gem, shut out Rangers
Michael Soroka pitched 6 1/3 innings, Geraldo Perdomo doubled in the only run in the first inning, and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Texas Rangers 1-0 on Monday in Arlington, Texas.
Soroka (5-2) gave up three hits, all singles, while walking one and striking out five. Three Diamondbacks relievers made it hold up for the team’s third straight victory.
Paul Sewald hit Corey Seager with a pitch with two outs in the ninth but got Josh Jung to fly out for his ninth save in as many chances in the D-backs’ third shutout of the season. Arizona is 19-0 when leading after eight innings.
Soroka has given up more than two runs in only two of his eight starts this season.
Perdomo and Nolan Arenado had two hits apiece for the D-backs.
The Rangers had four hits, all singles. They had won three of five.
Jakob Junis (0-1) gave up the only run in the first inning while starting in place of Nathan Eovaldi, who was a late scratch due to left side tightness. Junis tossed 2 2/3 innings and permitted two runs and no walks while fanning two.
Corbin Carroll looped a hustle double into left-center field with one out in the first and scored on Perdomo’s double to right.
Brandon Nimmo and Ezequiel Duran singled to open the Texas first, and they advanced when second baseman Ketel Marte bobbled a potential double-play grounder. Soroka struck out Jung and got Evan Carter to ground out to end the inning.
Soroka walked Joc Pederson to open the second before retiring the next 11, erasing Pederson on a strikeout-throw-out double play to end the second.
The Rangers did not get another hit until Kyle Higashioka singled to open the sixth, but Soroka retired the next three, one when center fielder Ryan Waldschmidt made his second running catch in as many innings.
The D-backs’ starters have given up one or fewer runs in six of the last seven games and have made seven straight starts of at least six innings, the longest active streak in the majors and the team’s best run since 2017.
