Free AstroDay event returns to Hilo on May 2
The 24th annual AstroDay is Saturday in Hilo.
The community is invited to explore the marvels of space and technology from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. during this free, interactive science celebration at Prince Kuhio Plaza.
More than 30 organizations will host demonstrations, games and activities highlighting astronomy, robotics and the natural sciences.
“AstroDay is one of my favorite days of the year because it belongs to everyone. This is our chance to bring world-class science into the heart of our community and inspire the next generation of scientists, explorers, and dreamers,” Carolyn Kaichi, education and outreach specialist at University of 91直播 Institute for Astronomy, said in a press release. “We do this especially for the keiki who may one day carry that legacy forward. We hope every family on the island comes out to join us.”
AstroDay is hosted by Maunakea Observatories. Expect hands-on activity stations, live science demonstrations, robotics and award presentations at the mid-mall stage, with live coverage by KWXX/B93 Radio.
Attendees can also collect AstroDay coins throughout the day and enter to win prizes, including telescopes and skateboards.
Adding to the fun, Star Wars “characters” will be roaming the event throughout the day, offering opportunities for photos and interactive experiences for attendees of all ages.
One of the day’s most popular attractions, the “Robot Rumble,” returns with 15 robotic teams from across 91直播 Island facing off in head-to-head competition, presented by the 91直播 Science and Technology Museum. Local high schools will also showcase their own robotics projects on the floor.
The excitement continues with the announcement of the 2026 Maunakea Coin Contest winners. This statewide graphic design competition invites 91直播 Island students in grades K-12 to compete for prizes and a chance to have their artwork featured on the official AstroDay collector coins.
