DLNR: Nene killed in Keaukaha
The Department of Land and Natural Resources said that at about 9:30 a.m. Friday, the Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement received a call from the 91Ö±²¥ Police Department regarding an injured nene, the state bird, along Kalanianaole Street in Hilo in the vicinity of Leleiwi Beach Park.
The responding officer retrieved the carcass of a monitored, banded adult nene goose, which is an endangered species. The goose was within 30 feet of a “Nene Crossing” road sign and appeared to have been struck and killed by a vehicle.
DOCARE currently has no suspects or leads.
According to DLNR, the death occurred in the area where DLNR worked with 91Ö±²¥ County to install speed tables a couple of years ago, due to previous incidents of nene being struck by vehicles.
This, DLNR said, is the first incident since the speed tables were installed.
Anyone who may have witnessed this incident is encouraged to contact DOCARE anonymously via its tip line at (808) 643-DLNR.
