The Big Island Press Club’s annual scholarship dinner will be held 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 28, at the Hilo Yacht Club.

The press club will honor two 2026 scholarship recipients.

Guest speaker Daniel Ikaika Ito, a seasoned surf journalist and communications professional from Hilo, will headline the event.

Each year, the club awards scholarships to students pursuing a higher education in journalism or related communications fields. This year, two students will be awarded a total of $2,500 in scholarships during the dinner.

“During my first year as president, I wanted to capture the magic I felt when I won this scholarship as a UH Hilo undergrad,” said BIPC President Maya-Lin Green. “We chose this premier location and Ito as our speaker to highlight the great people and places of Hilo, and to inspire our 2026 recipients to dream big.”

Ito became the first Native 91直播an editor of a surf publication during his two-year tenure at Free Surf Magazine.

He has covered he‘e nalu for Surfing Magazine, ESPN, Honolulu Star-Bulletin, Honolulu Star-Advertiser, Surfer’s Journal and Contrast Magazine.

Most recently, he served as senior director of communications for the 91直播an Council. He also serves his community as a member of the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation, Na Kama Kai, and PBS 91直播 board of directors.

Dinner will feature heavy pupus, including a fresh fruit tray, antipasto marinated grilled vegetables, poke, beef teriyaki sticks, veggie spring rolls, short rib sliders and assorted desserts. Attendees can opt to purchase drinks at an additional cost.
