Kona Choral Society presents ‘Lux Aeterna’ on Mother’s Day
The Kona Choral Society announces its upcoming Mother’s Day concert, featuring a performance of Morten Lauridsen’s “Lux Aeterna,” at the Outrigger Kona Resort Convention Center from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 10.
Under the leadership of Artistic Director Susan McCreary Duprey, the chorus will present the five movements of Lauridsen’s masterpiece accompanied by a full orchestra.
Written in 1997 and set to a collection of sacred Latin texts, “Lux Aeterna” is shaped by the central image of spiritual light: perpetual, healing and consoling.
“The title itself means ‘eternal light,’” Duprey said.
The program also includes gospel selections and 91Ö±²¥an mele.
“This concert invites our community to reflect, heal and rejoice through the transformative power of choral music,” Duprey said.
This performance brings to a close Kona Choral Society’s 36th season. The 100-plus voices perform four concerts every year, culminating in a spring masterworks program. The chorus is open to all — no auditions are required — and Duprey, now in her 16th year of leadership, encourages singers of all experience levels to participate.
Tickets for the May 10 concert are $50 for reserved-section seating and $35 for general admission. The concert is free to those 18 and under.
Tickets may be purchased online at www.KonaChoralSociety.org or at the door. There’s free parking (with ticket validation), and the venue is wheelchair accessible.
